Aquatic and Community Center Project

10.14.22

By Sean Ward, Director of Parks & Recreation

Picture 3 of construction on the aquatic center property dated 10.4.22Fall is in the air.  Leaves turning colors and falling to the ground signify change is coming.  That same ground amassing piles of leaves is the start of the new, developing aquatic and community center site.  The site’s construction is quickly materializing, becoming a splendid visual locale for a destination that will emerge as the hub for the City of Mayfield Heights. For the last five months, the A.M. Higley Co. has made its base at the Marsol Road site with daily workers excavating and installing stormwater retention structures, sanitary piping, and water and electric lines.  The underground work is nearly completed and allows the crew to turn their attention towards the pump pit and surge tanks for the new pool, followed by foundation work for the pool and community center.

Driving by the site, the almost complete service yard adjacent to the aquatic and community center is noticeable.  This newly added portion of the Service Department is part of the overall project. The service yard is scheduled to be ready in time for fall leaf collection.  To help conceal this area, a buffer was added and will be flanked with trees and a fence to divide the service yard from the aquatic and community center. Currently, the entire site on Marsol Road is being prepped for the winter season, where continued development will be seen in the coming months in preparation for the opening in the summer of 2023.

Holiday Festivities Came and Went, Bringing with them New Year’s Goals and Resolutions

aerial view of the rear walls and plumbing/electrical work going in at the gymAuld Lang Syne has been sung. Holiday festivities came and went, bringing with them New Year’s goals and resolutions. People all across the world are thinking of creative ways to lose the unwanted extra pounds brought forth by grandmas’ cookies and hearty family meals.  Here in the Parks and Recreation Department, we are thinking about it too.

While we were getting through the holidays, the construction crews made great progress on the site and continue to plod along. We can finally see a tangible product come into focus, with intangible possibilities of programming, fitness, and fun. As you drive by the sight, and the gymnasium comes into focus it may look like just bricks and steel right now, but we see year-round programming. When the abutting senior fitness area comes into focus, you may just notice the dimensions, but we see hundreds of people daily getting in shape and creating a better life for themselves.  When community center rooms start to take shape, people might look at the space it is taking up, but we see yearly parties and celebrations, and events.  And as the pools are getting formed, you might see big pits with poles and tarps, but we see thousands of smiles and can already hear the laughter from all the kids who are going to enjoy each aspect of the pool.

Take a look at the goals the Parks & Recreation Department has for this project.

Gymnasium

  • 12-month programming for adults and children, including:
    1. Pickleball
    2. Volleyball
    3. Basketball
    4. Soccer
    5. Youth After School Programs
  • The indoor base for the Mayfield Heights Day and Teen Camps

Senior Fitness Center

  • 12-month open facility

Community Center & Multipurpose Rooms

  • 12-month rental
    1. Parties and Weddings
    2. Social groups
    3. Adult programming
    4. Youth Programming

Pool

  • Amusement Park-like atmosphere
  • Swim lesson times more conducive to schedules
  • Cabana rental for privacy

So many more goals are to come as plans continue to develop. So many ways to stay in shape, gather with your friends and have some fun. Next year at this time it undoubtedly will be the place where those extra holiday pounds will be worked off, but for now, we keep seeing the possibilities come into focus.
