Citizens Police Academy

Citizens Police Academy

What is the Citizen Police Academy?
The Citizen Police Academy is a look into the philosophy and operations of the Mayfield Heights Police Department. Designed for Citizens of Mayfield Heights, the Academy educates citizens about the “hows” and “whys” of the agency and law enforcement in general, as well as the citizen’s role in the community oriented policing philosophy.

What topics are covered?
A wide variety of topics are included in the Academy. We cover topics such as Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Traffic Accidents, SWAT, NARC, Bomb Squad, Hostage Negotiators, BCI, Airsoft Range, and special guest speakers!
Various members of MHPD will serve as instructors and facilitators.

What is the purpose?
The purpose of the Mayfield Heights Citizen Police Academy is to provide information to our residents, so they may make informed judgments about the department and law enforcement in general. Understanding often dispels suspicions and misconceptions, and increases police-community rapport through this educational and open process. It also emphasizes our Mission Statement for a Police-Citizen Partnership.  It is our hope that our Academy graduates go back out into our community and share their experience positively.

When is the Academy?
The Citizen Academy meets on Wednesday evenings for 2-3 hours. The Academy runs for ten (10) weeks and is held at the Mayfield Heights Police Department. Classes meet at 6:00pm and will last no longer than three hours.  The Citizens Academy does require a time commitment from the student. Any attendee who misses more than one (1) session may not be eligible to graduate. There is no cost to the attendee. Casual clothes are recommended and Academy Polo shirts will be provided.

Who can apply?
